Just like to share some pictures of our basil and tomatoes.

Spring Gardening

March 2nd, 2011

Well we’ve begun the garden. I’ve got the tomatoes planted and have a bed of lemon basil also. I’m planning to add a cucumber bed. If anyone wants I’ve got left over lemon basil seeds which I harvested from last years plant, just let me know.

Maybe I’ll get motivated to post some pictures….. maybe.

Summer Garden

November 9th, 2010

Our garden did pretty good this year, but we forgot to take pictures of it! We had 3 or 4 crops of cantaloupe and the tomatoes and basil went crazy! I cut the tomatoes back drastically at the end of August and they are now producing a second big crop.
long beans and red peppers
The red peppers also did quite well considering how often we didn’t water them. The skins were pretty bitter but the flesh tasted fine.

The long beans were slow to produce because the Sunflowers we planted took all of the light, plus probably most of the water too. Once the sunflowers died back the beans took off for a little while until we got too lax on the watering.

Tucson edible weeds

April 25th, 2010

This past winter we got to experience 2 varieties of edible weeds that happen to be growing at our house. One, common mallow, grew EVERYWHERE in great quantities, and is just now beginning to die back in the increasing heat. A leafy green plant, I liked it best stir-fried with a bit of oil and salt. Apparently the seeds and flowers are edible too, but I didn’t try those.

The other, wood sorrel, grows in the planter by our front door, a “volunteer” plant that I presume is left over from the previous owners. It is also just now on its way out, after producing some delightful yellow flowers. Sorrel is mentioned in one of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. It is quite tangy eaten fresh, with a hint of citrus.

I hate Aphids.

March 27th, 2010

Last summer I had an epic battle with the Aphids that were eating my plants. I sprayed them off. I sprayed them with detergent water. I rubbed garlic on ALL the leaves of my bean plants. I put tinfoil around the base of my plants. Nothing I tried worked more that a few days. This year I have a few new things planned to beat back those pests. I’m trying Diatomaceus Earth which fights not just the aphids but also the ants which bring and harvest the aphids. It is harmless to humans and is a completely natural substance. I’m also going to try the chili powder and water spray.

Either way it goes I’ll let everyone know how my battle with the Aphids is going.
